Axle Energy alternative or add-on? Events vs daily plans

Thinking about an Axle Energy alternative? How grid flexibility events differ from a daily battery plan, and how the two can work side by side.

Axle Energy pays battery owners to export power when the grid needs support. A battery planner such as ShiftCharge decides when your battery charges and discharges every day, to cut your bill on a smart tariff.

They sound like competitors, but they answer different questions. This guide explains the difference and how to use them together if you want both.

What Axle Energy does

Axle connects home batteries to the electricity system. When the grid is under strain, it asks enrolled batteries to export and pays the owner for the energy sent during that event.

Events are occasional rather than daily. Between events, Axle offers a mode that leaves your normal battery schedule in place.

What a daily battery plan does

A planner works every day. ShiftCharge reads your tariff prices, the solar forecast and how your home uses power, then decides when to charge the battery, when to hold it, when to let it run the home, and — on an export tariff — when to plan Discharge to grid.

Most of a battery’s saving on a smart tariff comes from those everyday decisions, not from occasional events.

Using both together

Because events are rare and short, the two can sit side by side: the planner handles every other day, and the event takes over for its window.

Two systems should not send different instructions to the battery at the same moment. If you know an event is coming, pause ShiftCharge from Home for that window and resume it afterwards, and check your battery’s settings once the event has finished.

Check eligibility too. Some flexibility schemes exclude batteries already managed by an intelligent tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Flux.

Which to pick

If you want everyday savings on Agile, Flux, Go or Cosy, a daily planner is what delivers them.

If you also want to earn from grid events, a flexibility service can add to that. It is an extra, not a replacement for planning the rest of the year.

Common questions

Does ShiftCharge pay me for grid events?
No. ShiftCharge saves you money on your tariff by planning the battery every day. Payments for grid events come from flexibility services such as Axle.
Will ShiftCharge undo an Axle event?
It could if both are active, because each sends its own instructions to the battery. Pausing ShiftCharge for the event window avoids that.
Do I need to change tariff to use a flexibility service?
Often not, but terms differ by scheme and battery brand. Check the scheme’s eligibility before enrolling.
